This summer, I competed in the WSC Bangkok Global Round 2026 in the Super Junior division. I won four golds and one silver, and qualified for the Tournament of Champions (ToC) at Yale University this November.
Unlike the Tokyo Round, I teamed up with two students from a school in Indonesia this time. At first, it was challenging because we didn't always see eye to eye. However, I showed leadership especially during the Team Debate and Team Bowl. I'm so glad we were able to work together and won medals as a team.
The energy and passion of the students from other countries at the Global Round was truly overwhelming at times. I felt this the most when I was chosen for the Debate Showcase. Out of over 500 scholars, only 8 of the best debaters were selected to do a 4 vs 4 debate in front of the entire audience. Honestly being picked for this, teaming up on the fly with students from India and Vietnam, and speaking as the final speaker was a memory I would cherish for the rest of my life.
Of course, the Debate Showcase wasn't easy. I was amazed by how much our values could differ based on where we grew up, even when we were debating the exact same topic. It taught me how important it was to quickly organize and bring together different points of view in a limited time.
I also made great friends from Vietnam during the scavenger hunt at the amusement park, the Cultural Fair, and so on. We still keep in touch and talk about all kinds of things, which helps us understand our different perspectives and values. On top of that, I was incredibly proud to be the flag bearer for Japan.
Finally, I want to say a huge thank you to my family, friends, and teachers for all their support.
私は今年の夏、WSCバンコクグローバルラウンド2026にスーパージュニアの枠で出場し、結果として金メダル4つと銀メダル1つを受賞、11月にイエールで開催されるToC出場権を得ました。
今回は東京ラウンドのチームとは異なり、初めて会ったインドネシアの学校の生徒2名と組みました。最初は意見が合わず、大変でしたが、チームディベートやチームボウルを通じてリーダーシップを果たし、チームでも協力してメダルを受賞できてよかったです。
グローバルラウンドでは他国からの生徒の熱気に圧倒されることもありました。それを強く感じたのは、ディベートショーケースに選ばれたときでした。ディベートショーケースとは500名以上の出場者の中から選ばれたディベートベスト8の生徒が観客の前で、4対4のディベートを行います。それに選ばれ、インドやベトナムからの生徒と即行で協力したこと、また最後のスピーカーとして活躍したことは一生の思い出です。ディベートショーケースでも勿論大変だったことはありました。同じテーマについて議論していても、育った環境によって重視する価値観が大きく異なることに驚きました。限られた時間の中でそれぞれの考え方をうまく整理してまとめることの大切さを学びました。
また遊園地でのスカベンジャーハントや文化交流などのイベントを通じて仲良くなったベトナム出身と友達とは今でもいろんなことを話し合い、お互いの考え方の違いや価値観について理解を深めています。そして日本代表として旗手も務めました。
