3. Southeast Asia Day 3 Summary
Welcome Ceremony / Presentations / Thai Traditional Dance Class / Thai Music Class
The day started with a rockstar welcome in front of the whole school. The way the students at Benjamarachalai reacted, you would think that they were welcoming a well-known international idol group!
Our students made presentations about various aspects of Japanese culture to the grade 10 students. They were similarly enthusiastic in their applause after each presentation. We hope that the presentations sparked some interest in them to come and visit Japan someday.
Thai traditional dance class was a test of finger flexibility. Our students struggled to follow movements which the teacher and members of the traditional Thai dance club performed with effortless grace. At times, we danced as we walked around in circles, and it felt as if we were performing the Thai version of bon-odori.
We got more traditional Thai culture in the afternoon when we got a lesson on how to play the Thai long drum called the Glong Yao. It looks simple at first, but getting the right sound and rhythm was much more difficult than one might expect. The students really enjoyed playing on them, and then performing a simple piece together with the music teacher. The music teachers also demonstrated how to play the ranat (a wooden xylophone-like instrument) which can be heard in almost all traditional dance music.
It was yet another very memorable day where everyone got to experience the hospitality of the Thai people.
この日は、学校全体からの熱烈な「ロックスター級」の大歓迎でスタートしました！ベンジャマラチャライ校の生徒たちの盛り上がりぶりは、まるで海外の超有名アイドルグループを迎えているかのようでした！
私たちの生徒は、高校1年生（日本の高校1年生に相当）に向けて、日本文化のさまざまな魅力についてのプレゼンテーションを行いました。発表が終わるたびに、生徒たちは同じように大熱狂の拍手を送ってくれました。今回のプレゼンがきっかけとなり、いつか日本を訪れてみたいと思ってもらえたら嬉しいです。
タイの伝統舞踊の授業では、指の柔軟性が試されました。先生やタイ伝統舞踊部の部員たちが、軽やかで優雅に踊る動きに、私たちの生徒は大苦戦！時折、輪になって歩きながら踊る場面もあり、まるでタイ版の「盆踊り」を踊っているかのような不思議な一体感がありました。
午後からはさらにタイの伝統文化に触れ、「クロン・ヤオ」と呼ばれるタイの長胴太鼓の演奏レッスンを受けました。一見シンプルに見えますが、正しい音とリズムを刻むのは想像以上に難しかったです。生徒たちは太鼓の演奏を心から楽しみ、最後には音楽の先生と一緒に簡単な曲を合奏することができました。また、音楽の先生方は、ほぼすべての伝統舞踊の曲で使われる「ラナート（タイの木琴）」の模範演奏も披露してくださいました。
タイの人々の温かいおもてなしを全身で感じることができた、またしても思い出深い一日となりました。
