2. Southeast Asia Second Day Summary
Arrival at Benjamarachalai School / Welcome Party
After dropping off our luggage at the school, the day started off with one of the highlights of the trip – visiting the Grand Palace. As one would expect, the weather was hot and humid, but that didn’t take away from the beauty of the palace and temple grounds. The richness of the history and culture that is concentrated here is something to behold. The constant refurbishing and upkeep make this place a living piece of history.
The afternoon session was a very fun and tasty cooking class where we prepared Tom kha gai (Thai coconut chicken soup). It was very quick and simple to make, yet the taste was better than what you would have at most restaurants in Japan! Having fresh ingredients like fresh coconut milk and lemon grass was the key.
Finally, there was the welcome party where the students got to meet their host families. Everyone was excited to speak to each other in person after several weeks of only contacting each other through emails and SNS. There will no doubt be many incredible memories and friendships made during our short time here.
学校に荷物を預けたあと、今回の旅のハイライトの一つであるグランドパレス（大宮殿）の観光から一日がスタートしました！予想通り、現地は蒸し暑い気候でしたが、宮殿や寺院の美しさは少しも色あせることはありませんでした。ここに凝縮されている豊かな歴史と文化は、まさに圧巻の一言。常に修復や手入れが行われているため、まるで歴史が今も生きているかのように感じられます。
午後のセッションでは、とても楽しくて美味しい料理教室に参加し、「トムカーガイ（タイのココナッツチキンスープ）」を作りました。パパッと簡単に作れるのにもかかわらず、日本で食べるどのレストランよりも美味しい仕上がりに！新鮮なココナッツミルクやレモングラスといった、フレッシュな食材を使うことが美味しさの秘訣でした。
そして一日の締めくくりは、ホストファミリーとの対面式（ウェルカムパーティー）です。数週間もの間、メールやSNSだけでやり取りをしていたため、実際に直接会って話せることに生徒たちは大興奮！この短い滞在期間の中で、きっとたくさんの素晴らしい思い出や友情が生まれるに違いありません。
