スタンフォード大学 SPICE ディレクター　ゲイリー・ムカイ博士による特別講演会
3月１２日（木）、国際教育および異文化理解の分野で長年ご活躍されている スタンフォード大学 SPICEディレクター ゲイリー・ムカイ博士 をお迎えし、特別講演会を開催いたしました。
本講演では、ムカイ博士が日系アメリカ人としてのご自身の歩みを踏まえながら、「グローバル市民とは何か」 についてお話しくださいました。講演は、博士による 8つの個人的な考察 を軸に進められました。家族の写真や明治時代から残っているパスポートなどの歴史的な資料の実物を共有しながら、約４０名の生徒保護者の質問にお答えしました。以下、生徒の感想です。

生徒の感想：
ゲイリー・ムカイ博士の講演を聞いて、「グローバル市民」という言葉にとても興味を持ちました。
私はこの自然豊かで美しく、平和な日本に日本人として生まれたことをとても誇りに思っています。そのためこれまで、なぜ日本人に生まれたのかということを考えたことはありませんでした。
しかし、アメリカで日本人として差別され、日本に悪い感情（主に第二次世界大戦のため）を持っていたにも関わらず、群馬に暮らそうとし、祖父の故郷である広島に足を運び、たくさんの家族や日本人と出会い、触れ合うという行動を起こした博士にとても感動しました。もし私なら、子供の時に敬遠していた国があってもわざわざその国について興味を持ったり、訪れたりしないでしょう。博士の日系アメリカ人というバックグラウンドとルーツを理解し、日本とアメリカの歴史や関係性ついて知り、自身のありのままの姿を尊重する博士の考え方は、素晴らしいことだと感じました。最終的に日本が大好きになりました。
自分自身や自国、また他者や他国について関心を持ち文化の違いを敬うことはこのグローバル化が進んでいる今、とても重要なことだと思います。
他国について偏見を持ってしまいがちですが、魅力的な部分を探したり、様々な国の人と関わることをこれからの人生で大切にしていきたいです。

Student Reflections:
After listening to Dr. Gary Mukai’s lecture, I became deeply interested in the concept of a "global citizen."
I take great pride in having been born—as a Japanese person—in this beautiful, peaceful, and nature-rich country of Japan. Consequently, until now, I had never really stopped to consider *why* I was born Japanese.
However, I was deeply moved by Dr. Mukai’s actions: despite having faced discrimination as a Japanese person in the United States—and despite harboring negative feelings toward Japan himself (primarily because of World War II)—he took the initiative to live in Gunma, Japan, and visit Hiroshima, his grandfather’s hometown, where he met and interacted with numerous family members and Japanese people. If I were in his shoes, I doubt I would go out of my way to take an interest in—or visit—a country I distanced myself from as a child. I felt that Dr. Mukai’s mindset was truly admirable—his commitment to understanding his own background and roots as a Japanese American, to learning about the history and relationship between Japan and the U.S., and to embracing his authentic self. He came to love Japan.
I believe that taking an interest in oneself and one’s own country—as well as in others and other nations—and respecting cultural differences is of paramount importance in today’s increasingly globalized world. While it is easy to fall into the trap of holding prejudices against other countries, I intend to make it a priority throughout my life to seek out their appealing qualities and to engage with people from diverse nations.
